THE BIG C IN ME

Life, Hope, and Faith on the Road Through Cancer

A book by Andy Robinson

Book Overview

Covering themes from facing a terminal diagnosis to finding unshakeable peace, wrestling honestly with healing to embracing eternity, building resilience to refusing to die twice, The Big C in Me offers hard-won, faith-forged wisdom drawn straight from the chemo chair, the recovery room, and the quiet hours before dawn when fear tries its hardest.

Written with warmth, humour, and the kind of honesty that only suffering can produce, and anchored in the conviction that it is God, not cancer, who has numbered your days, this is not a book about beating the odds. It is a book about truly living in the middle of them. With a tone that is defiant yet tender, and insights that speak directly into fear, loss, grief, identity, legacy, and the goodness of God, now is the time to shift the question from "Will I survive?" to something far more powerful: "How will I live?"

Chapter 01 - WHY ME?

When Andy receives his terminal diagnosis, the question that takes over is the one nobody wants to ask out loud: Why me? As a church leader, even admitting the question feels like a failure of faith. But Andy takes it straight to God, and what he discovers reshapes everything.

The real problem with "Why me?" is that it locks you into a victim mindset. It implies God either caused your suffering or is using it to punish or teach you. Andy dismantles both ideas. God does not give people cancer. He cannot give what He does not have, and sickness has no place in His character or His Kingdom.

The harder, better question is "Why not me?" We live in a broken world where bad things happen to good people, Christians included. Not as divine punishment, not as a lesson from God, but as the fallout of a fallen world. God does not send the suffering, but He rules over it, and nothing touches your life outside of His sovereign purpose.

From there, Andy lands on the question that changes everything: not "Why me?" or even "Why not me?" but "What now?" Borrowed from Holocaust survivor Dr Edith Eger, it is the question that survivors ask. It is the question that opened the door to this book, to WayMaker, to every morning Andy wakes up and asks Jesus what they will do together that day.

And woven through it all is the conviction that sits at the heart of the book: cancer is not the Big C. Christ is.

Testimonials

Brilliantly written, personal and very engaging

"Fantastic book, an honest and very personal account of what it is to walk through a cancer diagnosis and how you deal with that. Andy explores how your faith changes that journey in a very real and personal way.

Such a helpful book for all those struggling themselves with cancer, but also for family and friends. What should I do, what should I say, how should I be around them, how should I feel.

Bad times, good times, the book has it all, it doesn’t shy away from anything.

If in doubt, buy it and read it, how you view life will be changed!"

Brought tears to my eyes

When I was reading the book I was reminded again of Philippians 1:12 "Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel." Andy has lived this verse out as he has walked through this trial of cancer, modelling a wonderful raw faith that has encouraged the hearts of many. This is a big hearted and vulnerable book that brought tears to my eyes!

Honest Perspective

This book gives you a Christ Centered perspective from a person that is walking through life with such joy and hope while at the same time his blood cells are misbehaving.

This is the type of book everyone should read whether or not you or a loved one has battled cancer.

Andy’s transparency and humor are refreshing. Thanks Andy for allow us to take this journey with you.

Honest, encouraging and faith building

This is an honest but really encouraging account of Andy’s journey with cancer. It provides an insight into the tension between the realities of tough treatments, disappointments and day to day challenges alongside miraculous answers to prayer and unshakeable faith and the importance of having the support of close friends. If you are dealing with cancer diagnosis yourself or supporting someone then this book is a must.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In 2022 Andy was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer. Rather than retreating from life, he chose to lean into it, founding WayMaker International, writing this book, and continuing to invest in the people and causes he loves most. His diagnosis did not define him. His faith did.

Andy is the founder and trustee of WayMaker International (UK Registered Charity No. 1199440), an organisation that builds schools, drills boreholes, and supports orphans across Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and beyond. What began as a calling has grown into a movement, with projects spanning multiple nations and thousands of lives touched.

A gifted communicator and natural storyteller, Andy has spent decades speaking into the lives of others through church leadership, community work, and now through writing. He is part of the international leadership team of ChristCentral (a part of the NewFrontiers family of churches).

Andy is married to Hazel. They have two sons, Tom and Eddie, and two grandchildren who inspired the dedication at the front of this book.
